What: A daring labyrinth

[you somehow land into this labyrinth with a hard thud, sending clouds of dust flying everywhere. what you're in now is a stone room that has a flickering torch placed on each wall. it smells a bit dingy in here, like what one might picture an actual labyrinth or dungeon to smell like.

there doesn't actually seem to be much worth investigating in this room, aside from a sign and three old, wooden doors before you. the sign reads:

"If you risk it all, you gain it all. If you risk nothing, you gain nothing."

somehow, very inexplicably so, you get the strange sense that the riskier you play, the better the prize.]

[YOU HAVE ESCAPED THE DEATH TRAP.

the prickly vine holds your weight and leads you into a bright area. for a moment it's almost too bright—but here you are, having entered through a large hole in the floor; the vine is firmly attached to the edge of this hole.

you've entered an empty greenhouse. outside this greenhouse is a dying meadow, barren as though it has been overwhelmed by extreme weather. there is a door leading outside to this barren meadow.

scattered on the ground, however, are many indistinguishable seeds, though a closer look might allow you to discern any visible differences between each one. each planter in this greenhouse has an empty, but prepared, soil bed. at the plant preparing stand, which is a table containing small and large shovels, gloves, trimmers, and various filled watering cans, is a sign: "PLANT ANYTHING AND IT SHOULD GROW." there's a bloody hand smear across this sign.

furthermore, this greenhouse seems to have been a business—there's a cash register settled in one corner. off to the side of it is a large, burlap bag that's leaking a red fluid.]

[the large, burlap bag is a bit heavy. it gives off a foul odor, too, that, to be blunt, smells like pond water and blood. do you open this bag?]

[...yes. I'm certain I'll regret this, but yes.]

[that is definitely a fresh human skull with fish where the eyes used to be. there's also fish in the skull itself, and in the mouth. tiny sardines are stuffed into the nasal cavities, too.]

[and now I'm going to take a look at that cash register.]

[it's a brass antique model—one with the high-raised buttons. settled off to the side is a small pile of cash and coins totaling up to $1.11. the cash box is slightly ajar.]

[pulling the cash box open, keeping an eye out for more fish.]

[close! but not quite.

each drawer is filled with fish eggs. piles of fish eggs.]

[...lets take a closer look at the seeds and the filled watering cans.]

[there are three different types of seed on the ground (with several of each):

• perfectly spherical seeds

• seeds with fine, light pink lines on them

• transparent seeds that oddly let you see completely through them

the watering cans are, thankfully, normal—full of water, that is.]

[considers for a moment, then grabs the shovel and digs three holes in one of the planter boxes before taking one of each seed and planting them in each spot. when he's finished, he takes the watering can and sprinkles only a small bit of water on each of the seeds.]

[the seeds grow, very rapidly at that.

what grows out from the spherical seed is a net, like what would be used to catch fish at sea. it's ingrained into the soil as it grows, but that is definitely a net.

the pink-lined seed provides you with strips of bubblegum that smell... very off. very, very off.

the transparent seed grows... a gas mask.]

[...huh.]

[going back to take a look at the burlap sack for a moment...then takes it to one of the other planters, plants it (skull fishes and all), and then waters it.]

[lets see what happens.]

[the planter vibrates as this "seed" grows.

a human foot pops out of the soil.

then two.

and they're moving, perhaps... indicating they're attached to something, someone?]

[...grabbing the foot and helping to gently tug them out.]

[you gently tug this thing out. the legs are attached to a large fish... and hey, it's a living pint-sized reverse mermaid!]

[...]

[ . . . ]

Are you able to breathe in that state?

[it takes a deep breath and looks at its toes. its voice is high-pitched like a child's.

"Oh. I must be." it looks down at itself. "Thank you for rebirthing me."]

["Oh, right. I should have a name. I don't think I have one of those. What about you?"]

["I think I would be grateful, Van. You see, I don't think I need a name, but I know I used to have one, so I can't help but think that I want one now."]

Mhm...For now, how do you feel about...Jewel?

[the reverse mermaid blushes; it doesn't have any hands to cover its face with, though it seems to be trying with its short, short fins

"Just from the sound of it I can tell that is a name most suitable for me. Yes, I think I'd be happy to accept the name Jewel. Thank you."]
