When: Day 5, bright and early in the morning
Where: Labyrinth!
What: A daring labyrinth

[you somehow land into this labyrinth with a hard thud, sending clouds of dust flying everywhere. what you're in now is a stone room that has a flickering torch placed on each wall. it smells a bit dingy in here, like what one might picture an actual labyrinth or dungeon to smell like.

there doesn't actually seem to be much worth investigating in this room, aside from a sign and three old, wooden doors before you. the sign reads:

"If you risk it all, you gain it all. If you risk nothing, you gain nothing."

somehow, very inexplicably so, you get the strange sense that the riskier you play, the better the prize.]

[the floor suddenly gives out beneath you]

let's see where this takes us ]

[well, as you're falling, there are some vines hanging alongside you. there's no telling how strong they are, or what they're connected to, but it's not like there's a very clear view of the place you might wind up landing either just yet]

[ reaching out to grab as many as them as possible. at the very least, he can slow down his fall ]

[the vines hold strong, allowing you to slow until you come to a near stop

now that you're not falling as quickly, you can see what is below you: a giant hedge maze

and beside you, though several many feet over, is a large tree that can be swung over to—it seems that the vines are connected to a one if its very tall branches.]

[ considers his choices and swings over to the tree ]

[the tree's easy to grip, and it has many thick branches to settle onto

MORE CHOICES! so many choices

on one hand, you stand before a person-sized (not person-shaped) hole in the tree's trunk opening to a spiral staircase inside the tree.

on the other hand, just a few feet from you are branches with thick piles of leaves arranged visibly like steps leading downwards—not towards the hedge maze—but outside the tree]

[ ADVENTURE INTO THE TREE ]

[the staircase goes round and round... you can smell cinnamon apples as you descend

at the bottom, or what can be assumed is the bottom since this is your stop, is... a quaint, antiquated kitchen! there's an oven with its timer set—this is the source of that apple-cinnamon scent. there's no door in plain sight, but there is a small window with cute lace curtains. there's a small dining area for four off to the side, settled on top of a handwoven rug, and, of course, what is a kitchen without a fridge covered in pictures?

interestingly enough, there's also a young woman with her hair tied up and an apron on. she sees you (though it's hard to say what she sees you with—she has no eyes) and gasps.

"Oh! A guest! Um... what a pickle this is. Would you like some pie?"]

--What matter of pie is it?

[the young woman fumbles over her words, as though she's suddenly forgotten—she doesn't have a tongue either, it seems.

"Just apple, but I put cinnamon in it, just like my granpa used to. It's very good! I promise!"]

--If you say so!

["Then please, have a seat. The pie will be ready soon!"

she gestures towards the small dining table and its four chairs before moseying over to the counter to give them a wipe-down.]

[ SITS ]

[it's seconds before the timer dings, and the woman pulls the pie out from the oven. the scent of apple-cinnamon grows stronger!

as she places the slice (plate and fork included) before you, cockroaches slide out of her sleeve and onto the plate. she doesn't acknowledge this. she steps away.]

Er... well...

It... looks good.

[ look i like bugs and all and will eat them when necessary but this is a little too much ]

["I'm so glad." she does sound very relieved. but she sighs, offering a weary smile. "My family used to love when I made this pie. And they've been gone for such a long time."

it's faint, but the scent of something burning is in the air.]

Oh, where have they gone?

[ sniffing, trying to tell where that smell is coming from ]

[it seems like it's coming from the oven. however, this woman blocks any possible view of the oven by standing in the way.

"Off to investigate the surrounding area. Up above we have some strange... oh, shoot, I don't know what they are, they don't even make sense. Still, it's been a couple hundred years—they should have come around for some pie by now."]

Would you care for me to search for them?

["It's okay. They should have been by now. No use getting a stranger caught up in their antics. Why, you haven't even eaten your pie yet!"

...is that a swirl of smoke in the background?]

No, I insist! It is the least I could do for allowing me to partake in this pie.

[ and... trying to look around her to see where the smoke is coming from ]

[it's coming from the direction of oven, too. in an oddly convenient coincidence, the woman cocks her head to the side in confusion? thought? well, no matter, you can see the fire above the oven now.]

"A pie you haven't eaten? Either way, your offer is very heroic. I would only be able to repay you in pies! And perhaps rugs! I'm so good at making those, too!"]

Just by feasting with my eyes, I can tell that this is the only fitting thing to offer! Let my venture and the return of your family be my only reward!
