When: Day 5, bright and early in the morning
Where: Labyrinth!
What: A daring labyrinth

[you somehow land into this labyrinth with a hard thud, sending clouds of dust flying everywhere. what you're in now is a stone room that has a flickering torch placed on each wall. it smells a bit dingy in here, like what one might picture an actual labyrinth or dungeon to smell like.

there doesn't actually seem to be much worth investigating in this room, aside from a sign and three old, wooden doors before you. the sign reads:

"If you risk it all, you gain it all. If you risk nothing, you gain nothing."

somehow, very inexplicably so, you get the strange sense that the riskier you play, the better the prize.]

[she pauses—that catches her off guard.

"I'm afraid I don't have any relation to them... is something wrong?"]

Well, I met one, on my way here... He seemed terrified of me, since I was the same 'shape' as those in the tower, according to him. Why is that?

[Togo remains calm the whole time she is speaking.]

[she hesitates again.

—the oven dings. this woman is a bit too eager to get to the pie and fixate herself on slicing it. not long after pulling the pie out of the oven, she speaks very evenly.

"I suppose... it's because those creatures belong to the god, right? I'm sorry it took you as a threat."]

It's fine; we sorted it out. It also mentioned something about a god - about how scary it was. They also said this tree used to belong to their leader, and that it wanted to be safe again.

[Togo fixes the woman with an even stare.]

As a Hero, my job is to help those who need it. Please, can you tell me what has happened here?

[she holds a slice of pie out for you.

and despite her harsh words, she speaks gently, but firmly. there's no intentional malice in her tone, and it sounds like she's speaking what she considers to be the truth.

"The god asked for sacrifices, and out of the kindness of his heart, he gave this house to us. I can't help that the lesser creatures out there were put aside for our god's goal."]

[Togo's eyes narrow; lady, you just went one place you shouldn't have gone.]

Lesser creatures? There is no such thing. As for a God asking for sacrifices, did you even once stop and ask yourself if those sacrifices were worth it? What is your God's goal?

[...she sets the plate down on the counter, speaking a bit sheepishly.

"Our god has his own prophecy, one I don't know of, and he guides us towards the light. I dare not question his ways! We've always trusted him."]

[Togo is going to get wordy here. Deal with it.]

I trusted my god too, once. I became a Hero to serve it and protect my home. I fought monster after monster, alongside my friends. After a most vicious attack, which we barely survived, we walked away forever changed.

I lost the hearing in my left ear. My best friend lost her sense of taste. My other friend lost her sight in her left eye, and her little sister lost her voice. We were told it was temporary, but it wasn't. The monsters will keep coming. And I will have to fight. The more we fight, the more sacrifices we must make, until we are nothing more than vegetables. And then more heroes. More sacrifices. More girls forced to sacrifice all they have for a never-ending fight.

[She fixes her gaze on the woman once more.]

I don't trust my god anymore; it took the loss of an important thing for me to realize that. Look inside yourself - does nothing about what's been done feel wrong to you?

[the woman's eyes glazed over during that speech—she seems rather unimpressed.

"Nothing at all. My god acts in my favor. It sounds like your god wronged you. Please, don't take that out on me."

she ends that with a tired sigh... then smiles cheerfully, speaking in an upbeat manner.

"I never turn a guest away, but this time I will have to. You have declined my offer of pie, and you have attacked my god. Your time is up."]

Funny. I was about to say the same thing.

[Togo decides to end this the best way she knows how.

And that is by pulling out her smaller guns and shooting this zombie lady right in the face. At least the plant people seemed slightly sympathetic, and she had promised to take care of the undead problem, after all.]

[you know what they say—a bullet in the head is all it takes.

she falls to the ground, laying in a crumpled pile. there are no last words, probably because she believes her dragon god will help her.

he won't.

the room is silent, and it still smells like cinnamon apples.]

[Togo turns and walks away after that, heading back up the stairs. She wonders if that woman was all there was; her guns are still out in case that answer is 'no'.]

[thankfully it's quiet as you ascend the stairs. there's nobody coming, though you do have a familiar plant person waiting outside.]

[Togo blinks as she sees the plant person, stepping outside the tower.]

You waited for me?

[it nods.

"I followed quietly. I didn't want to distract you... but then I heard a gunshot! What happened?"]

[She's not gonna lie.]

I killed the undead. I tried to reason with her, but she would not listen. I had no choice.

["O-oh..."

it sounds distraught, but understandably so considering this is the topic of... well.

"...what was it like?"]

Unpleasant. I wish I didn't have to, but...

[It's not like it was a Vertex or anything. However, Togo is in Hero mode and that equates to being all business and such.]

[plant person shuffles its little feet awkwardly, glancing around

"I-I see... I never killed anyone before. Does that mean they're gone from the tree? Can I live there again?"]

Well, I need to remove the body fully, but yes. They're gone. You can live there again.

["Oh... thank you! I wonder if I can start a family there."]

[Togo smiles.]

That sounds nice. I'm sure you'll be able to.

[the plant person smiles.

"I will now. Um... thank you! Is there any way I can repay you?"]

[Togo shakes her head; as she does, she thinks she catches sight of an exit in the distance.]

You owe me nothing in return. However, I would like to have something to remember you and your people by.

[that you do. meanwhile, plant person's eyes glitter. it reaches into the pocket nobody would ever guess it had, and pulls out a stone. one that looks a lot like a Leaf Stone from Pokemon. it offers it to you.

"Here. This has one of my baby leaves in it. It means a lot to me... but not too much that I can't give it to someone who helped me."]
