When: Day 5, bright and early in the morning

What: A daring labyrinth

[you somehow land into this labyrinth with a hard thud, sending clouds of dust flying everywhere. what you're in now is a stone room that has a flickering torch placed on each wall. it smells a bit dingy in here, like what one might picture an actual labyrinth or dungeon to smell like.

there doesn't actually seem to be much worth investigating in this room, aside from a sign and three old, wooden doors before you. the sign reads:

"If you risk it all, you gain it all. If you risk nothing, you gain nothing."

somehow, very inexplicably so, you get the strange sense that the riskier you play, the better the prize.]

[ Debating between the two options. ]

In normal circumstances, most people would say to divide and conquer. There's more ground that could be covered if we part ways here.

[ But let's see if the queen will really accept that. ]

Are you saying we're like "most people" then?

[ He's ready and willing to split up from his king if that's what he wants. Though all things considered, does the king really want to split from queen? ]

[ There is a shake from his head at that question. ]

Far from it. I don't think most people are dependent on their partner like I am. I am curious to check out what's inside this tree-path, though. You don't have to follow if your curiosity is in the other direction.

[ No, he really doesn't want to part ways, but he also isn't going to restrict the queen's movements. Especially in this place where they can afford more freedoms. ]

Who says I'm not curious about it? You can go first and I'll either wait around or follow suit after you're inside.

[ That said, he knows all about why the king asked in the first place and well even though he understands the thinking given how they're linked—it almost seems a little stupid to consider any other option. ]

Besides in a situation like this, while it might be more advantageous to cover as much ground as possible—it would be detrimental to us if we split up.

Would you miss me too much if I strayed too far?

[ There are plenty of other reasons than that of why they shouldn't split up. But either way, and without waiting for an answer, he's climbing inside the tree to check out this path and allowing for the queen to follow, if he so desires it. ]

[ It's a good thing that he went down into the tree when he did. He'll save himself being swatted at by the queen. Who's waiting his own turn to go in once things seem clear for him to. ]

[inside is a staircase goes round and round... you can smell cinnamon apples from here, too. at the bottom is plenty of light.]

[ Now this is incredibly pleasant going down and he's going to be a touch bit reckless in his wandering down the stairs and look over his shoulder for most of the trek and back at his queen. ]

Smells almost as good as you.

[ What a lewd king. ]

Yes, yes, I'm very glad you find me sweet smelling but keep your eyes forward.

[ It is a really nice smell though. Comforting in some regards too—reminding him of a nice kitchen filled with all sorts of treats but at the same time given how things have gone, this might not be a good thing. ]

[the smell of cinnamon apples increases tenfold, and you're right about that: at the bottom of this staircase is a quaint, antiquated kitchen!

there's an oven with its timer set—this is the source of that apple-cinnamon scent. there's no door on the wall of this kitchen in plain sight, but there is a small window with cute lace curtains. there's a small dining area for four off to the side, settled on top of a handwoven rug, and, of course, what is a kitchen without a fridge covered in pictures?

interestingly enough, there's also a young woman with her hair tied up and an apron on. she sees you (though it's hard to say what she sees you with—she has no eyes) and gasps.

"Guests so soon? Oh, but the pie's not even ready yet... Are you two okay with waiting?"]

[ That's mildly disturbing, but he'll let it pass since he's probably seen some strange thing with magic about. ]

How long will it be?

[ Maybe that's a rude thing to lead in with, but it's probable that things are on a limit. And he's glancing to the side to his queen. ]

[ And his queen will immediately shut up and keep himself hidden behind the king at all costs. As sweet and wonderful smelling all of this is—he doesn't trust it. Call it because he's a natural pessimist but there's something off about all of this perfection and welcoming-ness.

Keeping sure to remain being hidden and his voice low he'll whisper to his king: ]

Don't get too comfortable.

[the woman smiles gently. she feels a little bad that some people have shown up only to have to wait.

"It'll be but a couple minutes. I'm sorry, I wasn't expecting anyone so soon.. please, take a seat!"

she gestures towards the dining area for four.]

I'd be more comfortable standing, if you don't mind.

[ He'll be heeding the warning of not getting too comfortable, but he is curious as to why a certain someone is hiding. ]

You were expecting us?

[ Upon hearing "us" earns the king a jab to the back as he tries to stay hidden. Maybe she could over-look the slip up and hadn't noticed him already, regardless he's not going to come out of hiding. The reason, he thought, should have been obvious enough.

Why expose that there's more than one of them here when things are sketchy like this. ]

[she giggles, interpreting the 'us' as a very silly joke. as she speaks, she begins wiping down the counters with a dish rag, busy at work with her back turn towards them.

"You and your stomach count as separate people? Haha! In any case, no, I have not been expecting you. I haven't had any guests in so long. It gets lonely, and I always think it's rude to turn anyone away. Especially when pie is thrown into the mix."]

[ OH GOOD. She took it as something silly instead. Sorry queen for his slip. His royal slip. ]

It's quite possible with the way I eat! [ There's laughter here that he'll work to hide what he'd done. ] Why are you here all alone?

[ Royal slip up, har har. But he's grateful that she hadn't noticed him and quite honestly took his mess up as a joke. Though, to be fair, on some level he might have agreed with the mysterious lady.

Just in case they will need a way out, he'll start scooting back some as well as keeping an eye out for any exits down in this room here. ]

[it seems that the only exit from back there is the staircase again. and the only other exit aside from that is, oddly, the small window—large enough to narrowly fit a single person through if that's the kind of thing you're keeping check on.

the woman seems at ease, idly wiping down the counters, occasionally checking back at the oven's timer—she really doesn't want to keep you waiting, and she'd rather not waste any time...

"I wonder if I'll have enough pie then!" she laughs... then forces out a sigh. "Well, I've been alone since my family left me a couple hundred years ago. They were inspecting some... Oh, I don't know. They were inspecting something out there. Afraid I haven't seen them since."]

Only time will tell.

[ The woman seems pleasant, even with how on edge his queen is. So, he'll keep up with the chatter for now. ]

You don't know what they were inspecting? Or where at all?

[ The hundreds of years is also distressing... ]

[ Hundreds of years is more than distressing it's concerning.

The queen is definitely paying attention to their routes and well that window is not going to be an option. The best escape for them, if needed, will be on this narrow spiraling staircase and he sure does know how messy that'll be if they need to hurry up it. ]

[she shakes her head, and turns to face them—well, him—again. as she speaks this time, though her expression is very gentle, it somehow becomes evident that she's missing a tongue.

"Something about going out to take care of this... oh, it might have been a creature? I'm not one hundred percent certain, it's been so long..."]

[ oh. well. that sure is a thing... ]

A creature, hm? And what exactly are you to live this long?

[ That sure is a thing and a thing that he isn't going to be missing and instead will just be huddling closer to his king and gently tugging. Maybe it wouldn't be such a good idea to stick around here much longer..?

But at the same time he's....admittedly curious. ]
