Where: Labyrinth!
What: A daring labyrinth

[you somehow land into this labyrinth with a hard thud, sending clouds of dust flying everywhere. what you're in now is a stone room that has a flickering torch placed on each wall. it smells a bit dingy in here, like what one might picture an actual labyrinth or dungeon to smell like.

there doesn't actually seem to be much worth investigating in this room, aside from a sign and three old, wooden doors before you. the sign reads:

"If you risk it all, you gain it all. If you risk nothing, you gain nothing."

somehow, very inexplicably so, you get the strange sense that the riskier you play, the better the prize.]

Greenhouses are specifically made for flowers to live in them! It's fine for flowers since it's a place where what they need can be casually given to them, I assume you need something different from flowers, if only because you can walk and talk.

Well, if you're all fine living here, you can, I suppose. I won't force you to come along if you're okay with that.

[the skeletons jolt upright in surprise.

"Don't abandon us! We're looking for something! We don't know what it is yet, but we want to find it. Leader, we think you can help us with this."]

Hm... You're looking for something, but don't know what...? That's going to make it harder to find, but I don't really mind helping out...

[Hm, let's see...I might as well keep exploring here, then. Let's check out the sack, then. Let's open this thing up and see what's inside.]

["Well... we're after something warm. And delicious. We know that much, right, guys?"

the skeletons all nod in agreement.

meanwhile, inside that sack is definitely a fresh human skull with fish where the eyes used to be. there's also fish in the skull itself, and in the mouth. tiny sardines are stuffed into the nasal cavities, too.]

[The horror. What a waste of perfectly good sardines!

...Well, they're not perfectly good anymore, so that's not really fair, but still, this is the worst. Why would anyone waste sardines like that? They're perfect.

I guess there's a skull there too, and it being kind of fresh is a little creepy, but... Let's just close the bag again.]

I doubt we'll find anything "warm and delicious" in here, so I don't think we'll have muc of a choice but to move on.

[And with that, it's time to head straight into the wasteland!]

[the skeletons follow you into the wasteland... but not two steps outside and your throat begins to feel tight. you might begin to feel lightheaded if you stay out here any longer.]

[...Well, I do have a gas mask for this, but...]

Are you all okay? We can go back to grab some gas masks if you need it.

[Yeah, she's not putting hers on yet, either.]

[the skeletons eagerly nod.

"Everything is fine. Why, is something wrong?"]

The air seems to be a bit toxic. I suppose it's not a problem for all of you since you don't need to breathe, though.

[Well then, for the time being, let's explore. She's not putting the gas mask on until it's actually starting to make her lightheaded, though.]

[it won't be long until she feels lightheaded. scattered across the ground are feather-tipped arrows, bullet casings, and many fish bones.

in the distance there are a few large holes in the ground. there's nothing distinctive about them; one is left, one is middle, and one is right. they're all large enough for a person to jump through. however, behind each one is a grave marker with something engraved on it, though it's too hard to make out from this distance.]

[...Hm. Checking out the grave markers seems like a good idea. At the very least, it should at least give us an idea of what happened.]

[the left grave marker reads "ashes to ashes"

the middle grave marker reads "bud to bud"

the right grave marker reads "wall to wall"]

[...Hmmm... Wall to wall seems like the most likely one to contain what they're looking for, so let's see about climbing down that hole.]

[when you go to climb down, you'll find that there isn't much to "climb", per se—it's a long-winding tunnel, like a slide, and all the skeletons will be jumping in after you.

"Oh, this does seem familiar!" one of them says]

If you know this place, that's definitely a good sign. That should mean we're on to something.

[But yes, let's take off this gas mask now. No need for it now, right?

...And keep heading through the tunnel.]

[yep, no need for the gas mask anymore where you're going.

eventually you find light at the end of this tunnel. you have arrived in the middle of a tall hedge maze. for some reason, red apples are growing on these hedges. the air here is fresh, and the sky is bright blue.

in the distance you can see a very large tree... but no immediate way of accessing it. there are two paths. one that, when you stand before it, you can hear water running. the other, when you stand before it, allows you to smell apple pie.

...but by all means, if you have a way to get through this maze without using the paths, be my guest.]

[...Well, I could transform and jump over the hedge maze, but that doesn't exactly help the skeletons any.]

You guys said you were searching for some kind of food, right? In that case, we should probably head on this path.

[Which is to say, the apple pie path.]

[the skeleton group grows excited as they follow you down this path of grass and hedges.

"Apple pie! Leader, you might be right! I even see apples everywhere!"

this seems to be the path that leads you straight to that giant tree. numerous vines hang overhead, attached to one of the tree's highest branches. it's hard to make out, but there is a large hole far up the tree, leading in.]

[...Well then, the choice is pretty clear, isn't it? More vine climbing!]

[there are many vines, so there's no mambo line to climb the vines—hooray!

once you're up the tree, you do stand before a person-sized (not person-shaped) hole in the tree's trunk opening to a spiral staircase inside the tree. you can DEFINITELY smell the apple pie in here!]

[Well then, let's head inside and see if we can find the pie scent.]

[the smell of cinnamon apples increases tenfold as you descend down the spiral staircase inside.

at the bottom, or what can be assumed is the bottom since this is your stop, is... a quaint, antiquated kitchen! there's an oven with its timer set—this is the source of that apple-cinnamon scent. there's no door in plain sight, but there is a small window with cute lace curtains. there's a small dining area for four off to the side, settled on top of a handwoven rug, and, of course, what is a kitchen without a fridge covered in pictures?

interestingly enough, there's also a young woman with her hair tied up and an apron on. she sees you (though it's hard to say what she sees you with—she has no eyes) and gasps.

"Oh! A guest—many guests! Let's see... Are either of you interested in staying for pie?"]

Yeah, that sounds good... Really, all of them have been on a search for something "warm and delicious", and they seem to like apples.

...Is there anything I can do to help out? I know it's kind of a pain to have to feed a bunch of random strangers, so if you want me to do something for you, I'll help out however I can.

"Oh, really? And... huh! Anyway, that's so kind of you! Since you're offering, and I believe it is only polite to accept a kind offer, you can begin with wiping the counters."

the skeletons shrug and settle down at the table—a couple have to stand. meanwhile, the woman offers you a dish rag. and as she does, a cockroach slips out of her sleeve.]

[...Let's just. Ignore that cockroach. Cockroaches have survived my world's apocalypse, so there's no way to escape them. For now, let me just focus on wiping the counters, yes.
