Where: THE BEACH of Port Perplex, but anywhere really
What:

[FOR POST-LABYRINTH EXPLORERS: you wake up somewhere along the beach, as though you just washed up on shore. it's especially hot today, and yet, the sun bearing down on you doesn't seem to be causing your injuries any additional discomfort. in fact, the heat seems to be relieving some of your pain—you might be lucky enough to feel no pain at all. still, you should probably get some help.]

[there's some immediately observable changes in Port Perplex. you see, the ocean is a vivid aqua color now, no longer trapped beneath a thick fog that once stuck to its surface. if you look out in the distance over the ocean, you'll see a beautiful sky. the sand along the shore is now soft and warm. furthermore, there's some coconut-bearing palm trees dotting the shore. in summary, this looks like a tropical beach now!

for the next however many days, you'll be able to discover some other things, as well as participate in the festivities taking place all along the beach. it helps that your employer MIGHT have just given everyone a vacation! you see, every single one of the townsfolk are thrilled for this new development, and they're more than eager to celebrate its arrival!]

[before Zack staggers back to town for medical care, he's just going to take a moment to lie back and absorb the sunlight and thank God that he doesn't appear to be dead. There's a few bloody holes in his shirt, blood and what looks like fishline around his mouth (though it is no longer holding his mouth shut, some of it still remains), and his shoes and socks are missing.]

[Eventually, he is going to try to get to his feet and check on any other Heroes. But not now.]

[Echo wasn't in the labyrinth—in fact, she was just curiously wandering around the beach, checking out the Upgrade, before she spotted him]

[and in seconds she's kneeling at his side]

A-are you okay?

[he has to consider this]

... probably not. I can't tell if the sunlight is helping, or this is what going into shock feels like.

[his speech is a bit distorted from facial wounds, but he can still talk]

[after observing the extent of his injuries... oh.]

...I am sorry I asked.

[she places her hand over his wrist—and quickly withdraws it, realizing that she, PERSONALLY, is unable to feel his pulse no matter what, so that was... pointless of her to even try to do.]

It could be shock. But—the sun is helping?

I think so... It hurts less than it did.

That cannot be possible.

[and yet, she makes sure that she's not casting a shadow over him]

How did this happen?

Labyrinth. We were trapped in a room with a monster that wanted to torture us.

[struggles to sit up and look around]

Do you see Van and Archer?

[nnnnot sure what to make of that...]

Echo has not seen them--not here. Were you with them? Are they as injured as you?

Yes. Van is missing an ear and Archer was beaten badly.

[... what is his life]

Maybe they're at the clinic, if you don't see anyone else.

[who were they again. they are People that she has probably met or observed at least once. hmm yes that's enough.]

Noted. Echo will remain alert for someone missing an ear, and someone who has been beaten badly.

Meanwhile. Do you need any assistance with your mouth?

[Zack nodded]

Can you, or should I go to the clinic?

...I have a knife.

[and in milliseconds she's popped a knife out from her baggy sleeve. but, being realistic here, the knife's huge, the size of a short sword.]

Now it is your preference: would you prefer this or the clinic?

[that is a huge knife, and Zack jerks back. And winces] The clinic, please.

Very well.

[who knows, maybe the clinic provides Heroic Explorer's Insurance. anyway, the knife's gone now.]

I can escort you, if you would like.

[she hesitates... then offers him a hand]

Thanks.

[Takes it; using it to balance as he stands, and brushes himself off]

[her hand is oddly stiff; hard.]

You are not far from the town. If I were strong enough to carry you, I would. It would be incredibly convenient right now.

I think I can make it on foot.

That is a relief. Let's go.

[and, to town she starts walking. she's observing him carefully, though.]

[he is obviously in pain, and being very careful where he steps without shoes, but shows no sign of fainting]

[it's kind of painful to watch him. in any case, she's silent as they walk. it's not long before they're standing before the clinic.]

Here—are you still okay?

Not worse. Thank you.
